# Our Department's Approach to Conflict Resolution

**Norm:** We encourage open discussion and the free exchange of ideas. We can only learn, by voicing viewpoints that may evolve, are later revised, or even regarded as wrong.

To support this, we have an escalation process for addressing conflicts:

1. Direct Communication: First, discuss the issue directly with the teacher or individual involved.
2. Head of Studies: If unresolved, involve the Head of Studies for further discussion.
3. Study Board: If needed, escalate to the Study Board.
4. Study Services: For persistent issues, contact Study Services for assistance.
5. External: Only as a last resort, consider external avenues if all internal steps are exhausted.

**Key Principle**: This process ensures everyone has a chance to be heard and learn from discussions, fostering an environment where ideas can be explored, revised, or revoked without fear of reprisal.

.center[**Policy on the Use of Generative AI Software and Large Language Models in Exams**]

The Department of Sociology prohibits the use of generative AI software and large language models (AI/LLMs), such as ChatGPT, for generating novel and creative content in written exams. However, students may use AI/LLMs to enhance the presentation of their own original work, such as text editing, argument validation, or improving statistical programming code. .alert[Students must disclose in an appendix if and how AI/LLMs were used]; this appendix will not count toward the page limit of the exam. This policy is in place to ensure that students’ written exams accurately reflect their own knowledge and understanding of the material. .alert[Exams that do not declare if and how AI/LLMs were used will be administratively rejected and counted as one exam attempt.]
